Buncombe County
Stair Builder in Fairview, NC
Fairview is unincorporated Buncombe County, tucked into the Cane Creek valley with ridges on both sides. It's some of the steepest ground I work on regularly — long driveways, houses set well up a hillside, decks and stairs that have to solve a grade problem before they solve anything else.
Exterior stairs out here aren't a design flourish, they're how you get from the driveway to the front door on a lot that drops well below or climbs well above the road. I build to the grade that's actually there, not the one on a flat-lot plan set.
It's far enough outside town that access and staging matter more than they do on a level in-town lot — how material gets up the hill affects the schedule before a single cut gets made.
Around town
Cane Creek Valley
The rolling pasture valley Fairview sits in, hemmed by ridges on both sides.
Custom homes on real acreage, most sited on a slope. That grade is why stairs here solve access rather than decoration.
Cane Creek Cemetery
Established 1795, believed to be the oldest cemetery in Buncombe County.
A reminder how long this valley has been settled — there is older building stock out here than the newer subdivisions suggest.

FAQ
Local questions
- Why do so many Fairview homes need exterior stairs instead of just a deck?
- Grade. A lot of lots out here drop well below or climb well above the driveway, so the stairs are solving an access problem, not just adding a feature.
- Does a steep driveway affect how you schedule or stage a job?
- Yes. Getting material up a Fairview hillside takes more planning than a flat in-town lot, and I account for that before the job starts, not after.
