Transylvania County
Deck Builder in Brevard, NC
Brevard is the Transylvania County seat, tucked against the eastern edge of Pisgah National Forest, southwest of Asheville — closer to true mountain wilderness than any other town I work in.
It's also a college and arts town. Brevard College downtown and the Brevard Music Center just outside it have kept a good share of the surrounding neighborhoods built up and maintained over the better part of a century, so a lot of residential work here means working around an older house, not a clean slate.
Being right against the national forest, the ground steepens fast outside the town center, and deck and stair work has to answer the same grade and access questions I run into in the hill towns closer to Asheville.
Around town
Pisgah National Forest
The national forest the town sits at the edge of.
Steep, wet, shaded lots on the outskirts — hard conditions for exterior wood.
Brevard Music Center
A summer music institution with a long-standing campus.
It is why the town carries more high-detail seasonal housing than its size suggests.

FAQ
Local questions
- Does being next to Pisgah National Forest change how a deck gets built?
- It's less the forest boundary itself and more what comes with it — the ground steepens fast outside the town center, and the grade and access questions are the same ones I answer in the hill towns closer to Asheville.
- Does Brevard's older housing near the college need different trim or siding work?
- A lot of it does. The neighborhoods around Brevard College and the Music Center have been built up for the better part of a century, so matching existing trim and siding is common there.
