Saved a track-saw cut

A gutter installer said the fascia needed to be cut back. It didn't — it needed something to drain against.

The deck was floating, and it had two levels of fascia — one wrapping the frame, one lower down where the gutter had to sit and drain.

The gutter installer had already told the builder what came next: cut the lower fascia back. A track saw, cutting in place, at an angle, no sawhorses to steady the piece. Slow work, expensive work, and once it's cut, it's cut for good.

Nobody had asked why the cut was necessary. I did, before anyone picked up a saw.

The gutter didn't need the wood gone. It needed a clean line to drain against. A piece of metal flashing, set inside the gutter and tight to the fascia, gave it exactly that.

The gutter drains the way it's supposed to. The fascia is still whole. Nobody cut anything, and there's no extra labor line on the invoice for it.

Bring me in before the cut, not after.
